Journalist Ben Jacobs has been speaking on The Done Deal Show about how Newcastle United still hold an interest in Anthony Gordon.

Earlier in the summer, Newcastle made a move for the youngster, who only has four Premier League goals to his name from 32 starts, however, their £35m bid was reportedly rejected rather swiftly by Everton and no further approaches have since been made by the Magpies.

However, following Chelsea’s interest in Gordon and Newcastle’s dire need for attacking reinforcements, the club may well see this as their last chance to land Gordon and have the English winger in their ranks for years to come.

Jacobs has confirmed that despite only one bid being lodged thus far, Newcastle are still interested in signing Gordon this summer.

He said: “Newcastle still have an interest. Newcastle’s perspective, when they came at the table with £35m, was that Everton just wouldn’t budge on £50m and basically didn’t want to sell. But now as we get to this part of the window where bidding wars can happen, opportunistic last-minute moves and so on, suddenly, we learn of the [Chelsea] bid when Newcastle and Chelsea’s owners are standing next to each other.

Do you want Newcastle to bid again for Gordon?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“So it’s not unthinkable that Newcastle might see that as a message and also return to the table, and that could be what ends up getting the £50m because Newcastle enter the race and then Everton get the highest possible price.

“Newcastle have been quite prudent, though, with their spending, so it remains to be seen whether they will return.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle’s interest in Gordon…

As things stand, it would be safe to say that Gordon is not a £50m player – his stats of seven goal involvements in 51 Premier League appearances back that up. However, it’s his potential that Newcastle would be paying for, as he’s a regular for Everton despite being just 21.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Newcastle need someone that can come into their attacking lineup and make a difference straight away, especially on the right-hand side, but given Gordon’s apparent lack of attacking output, he wouldn’t likely be that guy and only come in to further bloat the squad right now, although he could develop in the future.

Therefore, it wouldn’t make too much sense for the Magpies to splash out £50m for Gordon as there are no guarantees that he will go on to become a player worthy of that price tag.
