Manchester United have serious interest in Atletico Madrid’s Matheus Cunha this summer – and a potential transfer ‘has legs’.

This is what transfer specialist Graeme Bailey has claimed on the latest Talking Transfers podcast as the panel discussed the plans at Old Trafford for the final weeks of the window.

It has been a disastrous return to Premier League action for the Red Devils, who sit rock-bottom having scored just one goal in their opening two games.

Reports have suggested United are considering making a move for the 23-year-old in the coming weeks, which could potentially cost them in the region of £45m.

And Bailey believes this is a deal which has legs to progress as United look to solve their issues on show throughout the opening two games of the new campaign.

He said: “This has got legs. United have been talking to Atletico quite a lot over the summer about varying deals and obviously, this one has come to light that Atletico are willing to do business.

“We understand it’ll take at least £50m, which is doubling the money for Atletico. Obviously, Hertha have got a 10% sell-on fee as well, so they’ll have to cover that.”

TIF Thoughts on Bailey’s comments…

If this is the striker United have in mind to potentially lead the line for the remainder of the season, we have some serious concerns.

Is Cunha good enough for United?

No

Cunha made a name for himself during his time in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin, however, he did stand out in what was a pretty poor side, having scored seven goals in his final campaign with the Old Lady.

The Brazilian is versatile and can play across the forward line as he has for Atletico, however, he was only able to return six goals in La Liga last season.

A lot of Cunha’s success has come playing in the Brazil U23 side where he holds an impressive goal return, but we do have big concerns over the impact he would have in United’s XI – especially at a fee of around £45m.
