Lee Davey, who has been speaking on the Loaded Mag YouTube channel, believes that Everton are now looking at Idrissa Gueye alternatives.

It had been reported that Everton were looking to strike up a rather sensation reunion with former midfielder general Gueye, however, there appears to have been a hold-up in any potential deal.

Therefore, Everton and Frank Lampard may be forced to move on to other targets due to this delay as the Toffees’ need for a new central midfielder is clearly desperate considering that Alex Iwobi is having to play in that position due to necessity, as Lampard claimed today in his press conference.

Davey believes that Everton are now starting to look at players other than Gueye.

(36:50) “I think he could go to be honest with you I think if there’s a late bid it is possible, but it depends if Everton were looking elsewhere which I’ve heard that they are actually, they’ve got one or two other bits lined up for that midfield slot.

Do you want Everton to sign Gueye?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“So, we’ll see how it goes but if he stays, he stays I think he’s got another year left on his contract anyway, so worst case scenario, he’ll be out the door next summer because it obviously won’t be extended.”

TIF Thoughts on Everton’s midfield pursuit…

While Lampard and Everton appear to have plugged an initial hole in their midfield with the signing of Amadou Onana, it isn’t right or a great look if Iwobi, a natural attacking winger, is having to be deployed in the centre of midfield.

Despite having a new stadium on the horizon and financial issues never too far away from Everton, they are certainly splashing the cash this summer having already forked out £50 million on Onana and Dwight McNeil, as well as James Tarkowski’s wages given he arrived as a free agent.

Which of these Serie A stars did the Toffees miss out on?

Given this lavish spending, bringing in someone who knows the club and may not require a high transfer fee given his age and contractual situation might not be a bad idea, although Gueye’s wages would likely be massive given the club he’s currently at which Everton can’t afford to get stuck with.
