Journalist Pete O’Rourke believes that Rangers target Tom Lawrence could fill the void left by the outgoing Aaron Ramsey.

The Daily Mail has reported that the left-winger will be leaving Derby County this summer upon the expiry of his contract, with the club failing to persuade the 28-year-old to put pen to paper on fresh terms after a turbulent campaign that saw the Rams relegated to the English third tier.

The same source states that West Brom are leading the race for his signature, but Sheffield United, Watford and Rangers are all vying for his services.

Lawrence led the team last season for goals (11) and also topped the assists chart with five – and O’Rourke is of the impression that the Gers could benefit from his attacking influence.

Do you think Rangers should sign Lawrence?

He told GiveMeSport: “He’s slightly different to Ryan Kent, he’s not an out-and-out winger, he’s probably better suited to playing as an attacking midfielder.

“Maybe where Aaron Ramsey played last year on loan, he could maybe fill in there rather than Ryan Kent.

“But I think a number of clubs are looking at Tom Lawrence as well, so it won’t be straightforward for Rangers, but I’m sure they’ll be hoping they can lure him to Scotland and join Van Bronckhorst’s side for next season.”

Labelled as ‘magnificent’ by his former coach Wayne Rooney, the 23-cap Wales ace has racked up 56 goals and 45 assists in 299 senior appearances at club level.

His goal threat is arguably an aspect of his game that could appeal to the Light Blues considering how despite making 20 assists last season, Ryan Kent only scored three times in 46 matches for the Glasgow giants.

However, it does remain to be seen whether Lawrence can be convinced to cross the border and head north over his other suitors – although the chance to play European football should be enticing.
