Writer and podcaster John McGinley has expressed his disappointment as Celtic look set to miss out on the signing of midfielder Vinicius Souza – but has urged the Bhoys to move on quickly.

The Brazilian has been linked with a move to Scotland this summer, with the Daily Mail reporting back in June that the Bhoys and a number of other clubs had a keen interest in the player.

However, it seems as though Souza will end up playing for one of those other interested parties instead. Indeed, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently sent out a tweet relaying the news that the player will now almost certainly sign for Espanyol.

In response to this update, McGinley offered his opinion online, saying: That’s a shame. Looked a good one.

“Hopefully Ange and the club can McGree their way into an O’Riley.”

TIF Thoughts on Vinicius Souza and Celtic…

The midfielder is currently contracted to Lommel SK in the Belgian second tier, but did spend last season out on loan with KV Mechelen in the top flight.

In that time, he evidently impressed enough to draw serious transfer interest from the likes of Celtic and Espanyol. In fairness, while playing in the Belgian Pro League with his loan club, he managed an average SofaScore player rating of 7.20 – so it’s clear to see just how consistent he was.

With that in mind, Souza may well have been able to make the switch to Scotland and impress with Celtic, but it looks like he’ll be off to La Liga instead. All in all, McGinley might not be the only Hoops fan to feel a little sad about this deal slipping away.
