Journalist Alex Crook has claimed that Southampton may have an edge over their competitors in the race to sign Levi Colwill this summer.

The Daily Mail has stated that Southampton are one of the Premier League clubs that are interested in signing Colwill this summer, but they face competition from other top-flight sides who are keen on signing him.

Colwill spent last season on loan with Huddersfield Town in the Championship from Chelsea and featured 32 times in all competitions for the Terriers, playing a key role as they reached the play-off final but narrowly lost against Nottingham Forest.

Whilst speaking on TalkSport, Crook claimed that the Saints have the edge over their competitors because is Southampton-born, which could be a factor in regard to where he ends up at the end of the transfer window.

“He is a Southampton lad, he was born there as a kid, that might just give them the edge should he leave Stamford Bridge, as appears likely,” Crook said.

TIF Thoughts on Crook’s comments…

Southampton have already made five transfers this summer, with the oldest player that Ralph Hasenhuttl has opted to bring into the club being 25 years old, so it is clear that the Austrian manager wants to look more long-term when recruiting new players.

Colwill might be tempted to leave Chelsea this summer, with them being heavily linked with Nathan Ake and Kalidou Koulibaly on the brink of signing, so he might not have a place in the first-team squad next season.

At just 19 years old, he might be tempted to opt for the loan route and then prove to Thomas Tuchel that he is ready to play regular football in the Premier League in the future, so if he was to join Southampton, a loan for one season may turn out to be a wise move.
