Journalist Tom Barclay has claimed that Southampton target Levi Colwill is highly rated by his current club and described him as a special player.

According to reports, Southampton are keen on bringing Levi Colwill to St Mary’s this summer, but they face competition from fellow Premier League side Leicester City, who are also keen on luring the 19-year-old away from Chelsea before the season starts.

Colwill spent last season on loan with Huddersfield in the Championship, and he played a key role as they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League, after losing in the final of the playoffs. He featured 32 times in all competitions for the Terriers.

However, whilst speaking with GiveMeSport, Barclay claimed that he is highly rated by Chelsea and you wouldn’t rule out him staying at the club to fight for a place in the side.

“If they start getting some of those guys in and you feel like they need a couple really because they’re mostly short of Rüdiger and Christensen, then maybe they might look at who’s going to get game time and who isn’t.

“But he is really highly rated and maybe as a special player, so you wouldn’t rule it out.

“One to wait on I think,” Barclay said.

TIF Thoughts on Barclay’s comments…

Southampton had a disappointing end to last season, which meant that they ended up finishing just five points above the drop zone, so it comes as no surprise that Ralph Hasenhuttl is looking to strengthen the squad over the summer to ensure a more successful campaign next season.

The Saints had the second-worst defensive record put of the teams that remained in the Premier League last term after conceding 67 goals in 38 games, so Colwill could be a good option, after being part of a good Huddersfield side last term that only conceded 47 in 46 games, and as he is just 19-years-old.
