Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Newcastle United are ready to spend big this summer if the right players become available.

Newcastle have already made three signings this summer, but it seems there could be plenty more to come.

The Magpies were on the brink of bringing Hugo Ekitike to the Premier League, but disagreements with his agent unfortunately meant the deal fell through, while they have been linked with Raul De Tomas as the hunt for a new centre-forward continues.

With Newcastle only making defensive signings so far, Jones spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed they are prepared to pay whatever it takes to bring the right players in who fit the team if they become available – and they are not necessarily only after big names despite their riches.

He said: “I’m not sure it particularly matters about the name. I mean, they are prepared to pay whatever it takes for the right fit for this team and, as it stands, they’re pretty open to who comes in.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Newcastle struggled in front of goal last season, as Callum Wilson was the top scorer with eight goals, and he only featured 18 times in the Premier League due to injury, so it might be a surprise that Eddie Howe has not yet added a new striker to his side this summer to act as healthy competition for their current first-choice striker.

In January, Howe opted to bring in Chris Wood for £25m from Burnley to act as a replacement for Wilson, but he failed to hit the ground running in terms of goals and only found the back of the net twice in 17 games for the Magpies, so if a new striker is brought in, he might see his game time limited.
