Journalist Chris Waugh believes that Newcastle United are looking to bring in a young and versatile attacker this summer.

Newcastle are seemingly looking to add some youth to their ranks this summer after finishing the season with the fifth-oldest squad in the Premier League, as they chased Hugo Ekitike for months and also managed to land 22-year-old Sven Botman.

The Magpies are now said to hold an interest in the likes of Amine Gouiri, who fits the profile of being young and able to grow with the club as well as being versatile enough to play either through the middle or out wide when required.

While speaking on Newcastle Fans TV, Waugh claimed that the Magpies are looking to add a youthful player to their forward line.

He said: “So Newcastle now are sort of assessing how they can fill at least one forward position, but ideally two. So, they’re looking at a younger striker, a versatile sort of forward who can play across the frontline, really.

“Could play instead of [Callum] Wilson in case he gets injured but also potentially alongside him, both in the formation Newcastle play at the minute – 4-3-3 – and also maybe in alternative formations.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle striker plans…

It makes sense that Newcastle and Eddie Howe are not wanting to bring in an out-and-out striker given that they spent £25m on Chris Wood and saw at the end of last season how good Callum Wilson can be, as he netted two goals in his last two starts after returning from injury.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Instead, someone such as Gouiri, who is still young yet experienced in first-team football, is perhaps being targeted as a potential signing given he can play across the frontline, as well as being able to grow with the club given his age.
