Conor McGilligan has been left rather frustrated after hearing that Leeds United may not sign a new left-back in the current transfer market.
The journalist had made clear in the past his belief that the Whites should be in the market for a new fullback this summer. However, his hopes are yet to be answered.
More recently, in an update that would have come as bad news for those who feel the same way, the BBC’s Adam Pope stated on Twitter: that the club say they will ‘go with what they have’ in that left-back position.
In response to this, McGilligan slammed Leeds for taking the ‘cheap option’ and said that it wasn’t a productive thing to do with regards to squad building.
Indeed, he wrote on Twitter: “Cheap option then. Glaringly obvious.
“The window has been better of course, but not signing a left-back and relying on an u23 with barely any first team minutes/who is a centre-back, isn’t fair/productive. #LUFC.”

TIF thoughts on Leeds and their left-backs…
To make things worse, left-back Junior Firpo suffered a recent injury which has meant he won’t be travelling with Leeds for their pre-season tour to Australia. As a result, this leaves Leif Davis and Leo Fuhr Hjelde as alternatives options. However, Davis is reportedly up for sale this summer, so he could be gone soon.
On top of that, as McGilligan alludes to, Hjelde is also able to play in centre-back and still being just 18 years of age it’s unclear what he best position is. While the same can be said of Davis – if he isn’t sold.
All in all, it’s not hard to see why the journalist is concerned by the club’s options at left-back and why he seems so desperate for more depth to arrive this summer.
Only time will tell if Leeds heed his warning.
