Journalist Charlie Eccleshare has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of signing Alessandro Bastoni are not quite finished.

The Inter Milan defender has strongly been linked with a move to north London already this summer. However, amid those rumours, the player’s agent Tullio Tinti recently claim that his client is ‘definitely staying’ in Italy right where he currently is (via The Athletic).

Such a clear statement likely would have put an end to most fans hopes of brining the centre-back to the Premier League this summer, but it seems as though Spurs supporters shouldn’t give up on a deal just yet.

Indeed, while speaking on The Fighting Cock podcast, Eccleshare suggested that the transfer is not ‘completely dead in the water’ because agents have mad similar statements in the past only to change their minds.

The journalist said (24:33): “What I would say is that I don’t think Bastoni is completely dead in the water. There is still a world in which that happens.

“You know, Inter have… many times before we’ve had kind of players from there saying, you know, agents or whatever, saying: ‘No, he’s not going to leave, he loves Inter etc, etc.’ And then things change.”

TIF thoughts on Alessandro Bastoni and Spurs…

One example that comes to mind is Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku. Last summer, he joined the Blues from Inter but he has since made it known that he wanted to stay with the Serie A club (via Goal).

With that in mind, it’s clear that even if a player does enjoy playing for one team, it doesn’t necessarily mean they will stay there if another side can come in with an acceptable proposal.

Tottenham may well have an understanding of this, and so they could be tempted to make a bid later on the summer despite Bastoni’s agents recent comments – Eccleshare evidently doesn’t seem to think it would be out of the question.

Still only 23 years of age, the Italian has already won a number of trophies in Italy. Perhaps he could seek a challenge in England next with Spurs. One thing is for certain, you can never say never.
