Journalist Alex Crook has claimed that Matt Doherty will leave Tottenham Hotspur over the next few months in the summer transfer window.

Doherty had a mixed season for Tottenham last campaign, he did not feature much in the first half of the season, and then he suffered a season-ending injury which meant that he missed the final seven games. However, he did start seven games in a row before suffering his injury, where he was in fine form after scoring twice and assisting three times.

Djed Spence has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs, which could be an indication that Antonio Conte is keen to offload one of the current right-backs, and with Doherty starting just nine games in the Premier League last season, he could be the man to be shown the door.

With the potential departure of Doherty from Spurs, Crook spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that Sergio Reguilon and Tanguy Ndombele could be two more players to be shown the door by Conte:

“Doherty will leave, I think Sergio Reguilon is struggling to demand a regular game as well, so they might well cash in on him.

“Also, if they get decent money, Ndombele will go, so I think it’s going to be a really busy summer at Tottenham,” Crook said.

TIF Thoughts on Crook’s comments…

Doherty struggled to find any form in a Spurs shirt until the recent run of games before his injury, but with the spell of impressive performances lasting just seven games, this might not be enough to prove to Conte that he deserves a place in the squad next season.

Especially if Conte brought in sought-after defender Spence, it would be almost definite that Doherty or Emerson Royal would part ways with the club, and with the latter featuring 31 times last term, it does not look good for the Irish international.

The Italian boss has been vocal in his praise of Doherty in recent months with Conte saying this about the defender back in February:

“Doherty is another player that is improved. He has worked a lot. I like him because if he plays or if he doesn’t play he is committed and his attitude is always at the top. He understood that he can have an important part of this team.”
