Newcastle United reporter Andrew Musgrove has hit out at Jurgen Klopp after the German suggested only Liverpool would host a victory parade the day after losing a Champions League final.

The Reds were defeated 1-0 by Real Madrid in Paris in European football’s showpiece event – although the scenes outside the Stade de France did not suggest it was an occasion of such grandeur. While that was a big disappointment, the club still won two trophies, the FA Cup and the League Cup, and a victory parade was held on Sunday.

As thousands of fans turned up to show their support, Klopp said no other club in the world would host a parade in such circumstances and have such a turnout.

Musgrove disagreed, referencing the scenes after Newcastle reached successive FA Cup finals in the 1990s. He wrote on Twitter: “I get this is something that people will say ‘well, what else do you expect him to say?’ but Jurgen Klopp’s quotes are just plain wrong. We all remember the ‘parades’ in Newcastle after the ’98 and ’99 finals. You couldn’t get moved.”

TIF Thoughts on Klopp’s comments…

Given the loss of the night before, it was impressive to see how many Liverpool fans were present for the celebrations. Klopp was more than likely just lost in the moment and wanted to express his gratitude to the fanbase who have backed them all year.

However, as Musgrove explains, it would likely have been the same for other clubs. For the two Magpies parades the reporter alluded to, they came after defeats, meaning there was no trophy for Newcastle to even celebrate.

The club’s supporters will be hoping they have some real success to enjoy in the near future in the Premier League or the cup competitions so they can show just how much the team means to them.
