Newcastle United could turn back to Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno this summer, amid reports of the Toon looking for a new man between the sticks.

This has been suggested by transfer insider Dean Jones, who has been speaking to GiveMeSport about the Magpies’ plans for the upcoming window.

There have been strong links to Eddie Howe’s side making a move for Manchester United’s Dean Henderson this summer, with Karl Darlow potentially going the other way.

Reports also suggest Henderson may only be keen on a move to St James’ Park on loan with his eyes set on David de Gea’s spot at Old Trafford.

However, having been linked with Leno back in the January window, Jones believes the Toon could return with their interest in the German if they fail to land Henderson:

He said: “Goalkeeper-wise, they like Dean Henderson, but they also went for Arsenal’s Bernd Leno in January so may yet revisit that if things don’t look good with the Man United man.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Interestingly, Bukayo Saka was full of praise for the goalkeeper earlier this season, calling him a ‘top, top goalkeeper’ and stated that he still ‘trains every day’.

We do not actually think this would be a bad move from Newcastle given the experience Leno would bring – while the German is still at a reasonable age for a goalkeeper.

If Henderson is only interested in moving to Tyneside on a loan, we do not think this would prove hugely beneficial for Newcastle with the 25-year-old hoping to return to Old Trafford as their No 1 goalkeeper.

It seems apparent the Toon want to address their goalkeeping situation, but we think they should be doing so by looking for someone who can lead them through the next few years of their development.
