Daily Star journalist Paul Brown has claimed Tottenham Hotspur want to sign someone who can play alongside Harry Kane – mooting Lautaro Martinez as an option.

Last summer, it seemed quite possible that the England captain could be heading for the exit door with Manchester City heavily linked throughout the transfer window. Things could play out in the same way this time around, with Manchester United already being spoken of as a possible destination as well.

However, while talking to GiveMeSport, Brown has expressed his excitement after hearing the Martinez to Spurs rumours, with the Lilywhites said to be going head-to-head with Arsenal for the Argentinian’s signature.

Should Spurs push the boat out to sign Lautaro Martinez?

Brown said: “I think being able to sign someone like that would be massive for Spurs. I do think they are looking for someone who can play with Harry Kane rather than just in place of him at times.

“Conte played Martinez and [Romelu] Lukaku together and it was incredibly successful in Italy.

“There’s no reason why it couldn’t work with him and Kane, although Kane is very different to Lukaku.”

TIF thoughts on Antonio Conte, Lautaro Martinez and Spurs…

Last season, with Conte in charge, Inter enjoyed a hugely successful domestic campaign as they won Serie A, ending Juventus’ nine-year reign as Italian champions.

At the heart of that, Martinez played in every league game, scoring 17 times and claiming 10 assists along the way, while his side lost just twice across the whole campaign.

With that in mind, it’s easy to understand why Brown feels like the duo’s past exploits as a team could translate well into English football at Spurs.

Under Conte so far, the club look capable of fighting for one of the top-four places in the Premier League. But if they can keep Kane and add Martinez to the equation, perhaps they could become title contenders.

For now though, that remains a pretty big if.
