Tottenham Hotspur should be attempting to bring Christian Eriksen back to north London this summer, according to Alasdair Gold.

The Spurs correspondent was speaking on the latest Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast ahead of Spurs’ game against Eriksen’s Brentford on the weekend.

Do you want Eriksen back this summer?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Reports suggest there are people within Spurs who hold an interest in turning their interests to the Danish midfielder this summer when he is set to become a free agent.

And Antonio Conte has already hinted he will be looking for his side to bring in a new playmaker this summer as he hopes Harry Kane can return to playing higher up the pitch.

Just two years from leaving the Lilywhites for Conte’s Inter, Gold feels a reunion for the Dane at Hotspur Way would be a great move for all.

He said: “If you’re getting a version of Christian Eriksen – albeit a new version – that is closer to the one, let’s say Christian Eriksen 2017/18, but obviously with added experience, compared to the Christian Eriksen that, let’s be honest, most Spurs fans were probably, not happy to see out the door, but resigned to the fact that he was going and he was no longer putting in the performances they knew he could. If it’s this new version, I think it’s a massive addition to Tottenham.

“And I think coming back as a very different Christian Eriksen, still with that point to prove, and let’s – fingers crossed – if Spurs are able to get into the Champions League, you’re able to offer him Champions League football as well, I think it’s almost a no-brainer.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

Eriksen has returned to life in the Premier League and hit the ground running. The 30-year-old has now made six appearances for Brentford and helped them transform their results, having grabbed a goal and two assists along the way (via Transfermarkt).

Not only do we think Eriksen could provide Spurs with some much-needed creativity which was severely lacking in their recent defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion having failed to register a single shot on goal, but we also think signing a player of his quality on a free transfer would be brilliant business as it would free up money to spend elsewhere, with Conte hoping for a number of additions.

So we have to agree with Gold in feeling this would be a no-brainer. If Eriksen is open to moving on from Brentford – presuming they’ll offer him a new deal – we think a return to Spurs would likely be high on his list given his history with the club.
