Antonio Conte is still seething over the challenge on Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty which ended the wing-back’s season.

This is according to Alasdair Gold, who was discussing Tottenham’s recent slip-up on the weekend against Brighton & Hove Albion on his YouTube channel.

Do Spurs need a new RWB in the summer?

Doherty suffered ligament damage in the game against Aston Villa just over a week ago after a heavy challenge from Matty Cash, which saw the Irishman set for months of rehabilitation.

The challenge from Cash was not even deemed a foul by Graham Scott in the game at Villa Park, and Cash has since been seen lapping up the criticism from Spurs fans on Twitter.

With Conte now without his right wing-back for the 2021/22 season run-in, Gold revealed the Italian is still not over his frustrations with the Villa man.

He said: “I mean, look, Conte is really angry with the Matty Cash challenge on Matt Doherty. [He] kind of spoke about it again after this match when asked about players being protected as there was a few tough tackles.

“When it came to the Doherty challenge last week, obviously Conte, he is absolutely still, you can see, seething about that because Matt Doherty was finding his form and he was providing a key element to Conte’s team as that wide, pushing-on wing-back who essentially is like another attacker in the box.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

We think Conte has every right to be frustrated, with the challenge from Cash proving to be unnecessarily heavy with the follow-through and causing Doherty serious injury.

Although Conte will be furious with Cash for the challenge itself, he will also be frustrated by having Emerson Royal now as his starting right wing-back.

It is apparent the Italian is not a huge fan of the Brazilian, and it is understandable with the 23-year-old lacking the attacking intent recently shown by Doherty.

In the game against Brighton, Emerson failed to attempt a single cross, shot or dribble throughout the 90 minutes and was only able to record one tackle (via SofaScore).

Emerson has failed to impress. Let him go. Spurs has to get a proper effective RB eg Adama Traore or Jed Spence. Otherwise…..no progress….
