Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte does not have a break clause in his Spurs contract for this summer amid recent reports

This is according to Alasdair Gold, who has been speaking on the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast as speculation on Conte’s future grows.

Do you expect Conte to stay at Spurs this summer?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Reports in France have suggested that with Mauricio Pochettino heading for the exit door at the Parc des Princes, the Spurs manager has offered himself to Paris Saint-Germain.

This has emerged following two difficult results for the Lilywhites in their hunt for a spot in the top four that have seen Conte’s men drop down to fifth place.

However, Gold does not believe the Italian has a break clause in his Spurs contract, which still has a year to go after the 52-year-old signed an 18-month deal back in November.

He said: “Antonio Conte does not have a break clause in his contract, he doesn’t. There is no clause for him to get out.

“I’m sure he and Daniel Levy maybe have had a chat at some point. And Daniel Levy might have said – and this is just a massive wild guess, this is not saying it’s actually happened – but you know, there may have been a conversation where he said, ‘well, you know, if you don’t like it in the summer, then you’re free to leave’.

“We know that that’s never the case. If it’s not in writing, it doesn’t exist. A certain Tottenham striker is fully aware that I know this term, ‘gentleman’s agreement’ – it means nothing in football, absolutely nothing. So all we know is that his contract has no break clause in it.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

The reports from France have landed at a poor time for the north London club, who are in the middle of a tense battle to beat bitter rivals Arsenal to the final spot in the top four.

However, we will be interested to see how the Italian deals with the questions over the report when he faces the media later in the week ahead of their game at the weekend.

We think the remaining five games could have a big say on where Conte’s future may lie, but a transfer meeting with Daniel Levy ahead of the summer window could be the real deal-breaker for the Italian.

But regardless of what is to come in the future, it is probably not the best situation to have hanging over the club in the middle of the Premier League run-in.
