Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has claimed that Newcastle United have no interest in signing Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Having spent so much in the January transfer window thanks to the influence of their new owners, the Magpies may well look to heavily reinvest in their squad over the summer, too.

With that in mind, as the rumour mill begins to gather momentum, fans can likely expect a number of players to be linked with the club over the coming months as the current season winds down.

Should Newcastle try to sign Robert Sanchez this summer?

One such individual to have been recently mooted for a move is the Seagulls shot-stopper. Indeed, as reported by The Sun, Sanchez could soon be subject to a £20m bid, with Eddie Howe intent on making him the club’s No 1.

However, while speaking to GiveMeSport, Downie revealed that his sources could not back up such a claim on a ‘top‘ target of Newcastle’s.

He explained: “I’ve been told that there’s no substance to the Sanchez story at all.”

TIF Thoughts on Robert Sanchez and NUFC…

This season, Sanchez has been Brighton’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, playing in 30 of their 31 Premier League games so far. In that time, he’s let in just 35 goals and kept eight clean sheets.

Considering Newcastle have shipped 54 goals in 31 games this term, it’s easy to see why talk of Howe wanting a new goalkeeper could emerge.

Still, if Downie’s information is correct, it seems rather unlikely that Sanchez will end up in the famous black and white this summer.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

With Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Mark Gillespie all available for the Magpies currently, it may take one of them leaving before the club seriously consider a new goalkeeper in the transfer market.
