Fabrizio Romano has been speaking on The United Stand YouTube channel about who could become Manchester United’s new assistant coach under Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United are still reportedly in discussions to bring in Ten Hag as their new manager after this season, which would see the Dutch boss manage his first top-flight club outside of the Eredivisie – and he would likely look to bring in some of his own coaching staff.

A few names have been floating about in terms of who could join Ten Hag, and more specifically, who could come in to be his No 2, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant Steve McClaren being linked with the role.

Romano has admitted that talks have taken place between the Red Devils and the former assistant.

He said: “From what I’m told, McClaren had some conversations on this point, so it could be an option – he’s really appreciated, the relationship is good with Ten Hag. He knows English football, so could be a good solution, but this is not decided yet.”

Manchester United fans, do you remember how many points you picked up in seasons gone by? Let's find out, starting with 2020/21

It would be quite a sensational return for McClaren, whose last job in management was in the hotseat at QPR after failing to impress in his previous Premier League job at Newcastle United, but would likely be welcomed with open arms at Old Trafford given he was Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant during the club’s treble-winning season.

There have been a few other names linked with the job, including another former assistant in Rene Meulensteen, who was also at the club under Ferguson, as well as one of the Scottish manager’s signings, Robin Van Persie, who has limited coaching experience and could therefore be a bigger risk.
