Everton supporters will be furious to hear what Dermot Gallagher has had to say about the Anthony Gordon incident in the Merseyside derby.

Gordon was at the centre of a lot of things during the Merseyside derby, which was analysed live on Sky Sports News during their Ref Watch segment, with former Premier League referee Gallagher claiming that Stuart Attwell did ultimately come to the right decision when not awarding the Toffees a spot-kick when he appeared to be felled by Liverpool defender Joel Matip.

Should Gordon have been awarded a penalty?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

The young winger had been booked for simulation by Atwell in the first half which may well have played on the referee’s mind when he decided to not award a spot-kick after Joel Matip bundled into the back of Gordon – something that would have likely changed the game with the score at 0-0.

Gallagher has been speaking on Sky Sports about the key incident involving Gordon, saying: “You cannot say the referee has made a clear and obvious error because he’s thought it through so much.”

Which of these Serie A stars did the Toffees miss out on?

Gordon himself has admitted that he can understand why Attwell did not point to the spot in the first half, although he does think the yellow card was harsh, but the winger also claimed post-match that Matip stood on his foot in the box leaving him in significant pain, which would suggest that the referee should’ve given the penalty.

Richard Keys has pointed out that the PGMOL have claimed that if a penalty had been awarded by Atwell, they would have had no complaints and thus not suggested a pitchside review of the decision, meaning that it would have been the correct one, so for Gallagher to claim live on TV that people can’t say the referee made an obvious error will be baffling and very irritating, to say the least.
