Fabrizio Romano has revealed on the Que Golazo YouTube channel Steven Gerrard has been scouting a soon-to-be free agent for Aston Villa.

Gerrard was certainly backed in January by Aston Villa’s owners with the likes of Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho arriving, but if they are to avoid relegation into the Championship next term, Gerrard may well be handed a bigger transfer warchest.

However, Villa’s owners may not be willing to go silly in the transfer market as they look to ensure they don’t end up like Everton and struggle to cope with Financial Fair Play regulations, so free agents could well be a serious option this summer.

Romano has revealed that Boubacar Kamara, who is currently valued at £22.5 million (as per Transfermarkt), has already been personally scouted by Gerrard.

He said: “So, first point is Steven Gerrard was in Marseille to scout Boubacar Kamara, he’s a player that has always been high on the list of Aston Villa for the summer. He is available on a free – no agreement with Marseille to extend the contract.

“Also, Atletico Madrid are interested in him, and so Atletico Madrid, I’m told that they’re leading the race.

“It’s not going to be an easy one for Aston Villa, but for Kamara, it’s still open, he is a free agent, and so let’s see in the coming days what happens between Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid.”

TIF Thoughts on Villa’s interest in Kamara…

Villa were credited with an interest in the Marseille midfielder back in January, however, they clearly thought it would be better to wait until the summer when he would be a free agent, although this appears to have slightly backfired, with the Midlands club now lagging behind Atletico Madrid – who can offer European football – in the race to sign the midfielder.

In January, Kamara was also attracting interest from Manchester United, so if he’s being linked with these sorts of clubs, he will likely have a lot about him, so Villa will be hoping that Gerrard has personally gone to watch Kamara in order to convince the midfielder that Villa Park is the place to be for his development.
