Express & Star writer Matt Maher has claimed that Aston Villa will have a big ‘headache’ trying to sell unwanted players this summer.

Over the past few windows, the Villans have spent big in the transfer market, bringing the likes of Danny Ings, Lucas Digne, Emiliano Buendia and many others to Birmingham.

However, often when new players arrive, a club will have to offload others to make space. With that in mind, if Steven Gerrard wants to bolster his squad at the end of this season, a few unwanted stars may have to be pushed out the door.

Unfortunately, while speaking on the E&S Villa Podcast, Maher has suggested that this could be a big concern for the club that could ‘dictate’ how their summer spending goes.

He said: It’s great to fantasise about some of the business that could be done. But, you know, sometimes you hear, ‘oh, we will get so and so out’. It’s not that easy.

“You know, you’ve got to have clubs that want to take them, and you’ve got to have the players wanting to go.

“That’s going to be a headache. It’s not just a headache for Villa, it’s a headache for all clubs in the Premier League.

“But that is going to dictate the summer business and just how much they’re able to do, and just how much of a shake-up Steven Gerrard is able to give it.”

TIF Thoughts on Aston Villa and their summer plans…

There seems to be no shortage of rumours linking Villa with moves for exciting new players in the summer. Indeed, the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Yves Bissouma seem to be two names constantly popping up in relation to a possible move.

Still, as Maher says, any such transfers may be dependent on the club’s ability to offload some of their unwanted stars. And this can be a big issue.

Will Aston Villa finish in the top half of the table this season?

Yes

No

No

For instance, Arsenal reportedly had to pay a fair chunk (90%) of Mesut Ozil’s wages just to get him out of the club when he was no longer wanted.

One player who could be on his way out is Morgan Sanson. Football Insider recently claimed that Gerrard is happy to let him go, but that doesn’t necessarily mean clubs will be ready to snap him up for a decent price.

If Villa can’t offload players such as him with ease, they may well be forced into a more conservative transfer window this time around.
