Journalist Lyall Thomas has claimed that Steven Gerrard has not improved Aston Villa since he took over at the club in November.

Gerrard was appointed as Aston Villa manager on the back of an impressive campaign with Rangers when he led The Gers to win the Scottish Premiership title and stop rivals Celtic from winning their 10th consecutive title in a row.

Aston Villa were flying high in the top half of the Premier League, but they have recently lost four games on the bounce which has seen them drop down to 15th in the league standings. In their last game, Villa lost 4-0 against Spurs at Villa Park.

After the recent poor form of Aston Villa, Lyall Thomas has claimed on Twitter that there are in no better position now as to when the English boss took over earlier on in the season.

“Something that seems to have gone slightly under the radar; Aston Villa’s dismal run since start of Feb. Seven points from possible 27. Dropped to 15th with four straight defeats. After initial new manager bounce, Gerrard hasn’t really improved what’s there has he?” Thomas said.

TIF Thoughts on Lyall Thomas’s comments…

To be fair to Steven Gerrard he recruited well in the January transfer window after he brought in former teammate Philippe Coutinho and also Lucas Digne from Everton.

Philippe Coutinho has revitalised his form since he joined Aston Villa on loan from Barcelona, and this could arguably be down to Gerrard giving him the license to be free-roam which has led to him notching four goals and registering three assists in 12 Premier League games.

With the pull that Steven Gerrard has, this could mean that Villa will be able to sign a new range of players, that they would not be able to go for in the past. So, this is an example of how Gerrard has improved Aston Villa and the performances on the pitch will see a significant change if they bring in more talented players.
