Newcastle United are expected to make a move in the summer for Premier League midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

This is according to insider Dean Jones who was speaking about the future of the 26-year-old on the latest edition of the Touchline Talk show.

There were reports towards the end of the January transfer window suggesting West Ham United had made their move for the Leeds United ace.

And now, it is believed Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa are eyeing up the midfielder as they lead the way in a potential £60m swoop for the Yorkshireman.

Jones believes the Toon could also be an option for Phillips with the Tyneside club set for their first summer transfer window under their new ownership despite their big ambitions.

However, Jones did question whether Newcastle will be able to match Phillips’ ambitions given they are still in the early stages of their Saudi-based takeover:

(2:00) “Newcastle will come in. I feel like he’s probably not quite ready for that right now. He doesn’t need to be gambling on a project taking off he probably wants a more established side to become part of.”

TIF Thoughts on Phillips’ future…

There will be an awful lot riding on the remaining eight games of the season for Jesse Marsch’s side with relegation still a possibility.

However, even if the Whites are able to remain in the top flight, we do wonder how Phillips will assess his options with the possibility of playing at a club potentially more likely to achieve something in the near future.

And with Raphinha also being linked with a potential move away in the summer, will Phillips feel the time to move on from the Whites is approaching?
