Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that although Ben Godfrey has been linked with a move to Newcastle, the Magpies have other priorities in the summer.

Ben Godfrey has been a mainstay in the Everton side when he has been fit this campaign having featured 19 times in the Premier League after he has missed spells of the season due to injury issues. Everton have struggled this season and consequently find themselves in a relegation battle, sitting just one place above the drop zone.

On the flip side, after an impressive run of form since the turn of the year, Newcastle find themselves in a good position for Premier League survival as they sit nine points off the bottom three.

So, with the summer edging closer, Ben Godfrey is one of the latest players to be linked with a move to Newcastle.

However, Dean Jones spoke to GIVEMESPORT and identified that Godfrey won’t necessarily be one of Newcastle’s priorities in what looks to be a busy summer for them.

“I don’t personally think that Ben Godfrey is one of their main targets for this transfer window. I’ve checked it out and of all the names that I’m hearing, he’s not really one of them,” Jones said.

TIF Thoughts on Dean Jones’s comments…

It’s safe to say that the Magpies have spent their money wisely since the Saudi takeover with the introduction of Dan Burn going better than they could have dreamed of, as he finds himself in the top three for player ratings with 5.7 clearances per game, 1.1 tackles per game and 1.1 interceptions (WhoScored).

Godfrey has some fairly impressive defensive stats despite being a part of the heavily slammed Everton defence, which hasn’t helped his own cause. In comparison, Ben Godfrey currently averages 2.2 tackles per game, 0.7 interceptions and 3.4 clearances, but his player ratings have let him down as he’s currently Everton’s 15th best performer (WhoScored).

The negative press surrounding Everton’s defence does cast some doubt over whether Godfrey would be a slight risk,  but it doesn’t look as if Newcastle fans will need to worry about that if what Dean Jones has said is true.
