Footage has emerged on Twitter from Celtic’s victory on Monday night which saw the Bhoys denied a goal after a handball incident involving Giorgos Giakoumakis.

It was Daizen Maeda who poked the ball home in the first half for Ange Postecoglou’s men with Celtic already one goal to the good in the Scottish Cup quarter-final.

Should the goal have stod?

The goal was chalked off after the Greek forward was deemed to handle the ball in the lead up to the Japanese striker putting the ball in the net.

However, there are serious question marks over whether the goal should have stood given the handball offence was clearly an accident from the 27-year-old forward.

It was apparent Chris Sutton was not impressed at half-time as he questioned whether the referee was aware of the rules for handball in scoring situations.

“You’d expect John Beaton to know the laws of the game. That’s the bottom line and he clearly didn’t,” said Sutton live on air.

TIF Thoughts on the footage…

Fortunately for the Bhoys, they were able to win the game fairly convincingly with goals in the second half at Tannadice Park confirming their spot in the final four.

However, there is clearly frustrations regarding the incident with the Greek forward unlikely to have kicked the ball onto his own arm on purpose. At this point, it may be safe to say that the consistency of officials in Scotland will be more of an issue for fans, with this video highlighting just how things can go wrong.

And there was a similar incident in the English FA Cup which saw Middlesbrough scoring an equaliser against Manchester United which was not deemed as a handball offence.
