Newcastle United could feel hard done by on Thursday night having not seen their opposition reduced to 10 men earlier in the game.

That is according to journalist Andrew Musgrove who feels Richarlison could have been shown a red for a possible elbow on Dan Burn.

Should Richarlison have been sent off?

Newcastle will now fly to their warm-weather training camp in Dubai on the back of two consecutive defeats in the Premier League after Everton prevailed late on in the game at Goodison Park.

Frank Lampard’s side was reduced to 10 men late on in the game after a VAR check saw Allan’s initial yellow card upgraded to a straight red by Craig Pawson.

But were the Toffees lucky not be down a man earlier in the game? The Newcastle reporter, Musgrove, certainly believes so as he took to Twitter to state his case:

“If anything, Richarlison’s elbow into the gut of Dan Burn is more of a red card than Allan’s because he looks at him, not the ball and leads with an elbow. Only one intention, and it was to hurt him,” tweeted Musgrove.

TIF Thoughts on Musgrove’s tweet…

Richarlison was booked for the incident involving Burn and it was apparent the Brazilian did leave the centre-back struggling for a little bit, as he barged into him at force using his elbow/forearm with no intention of winning the ball.

And it was apparent the pair were going at it for the majority of the game with the Everton forward also seen trying to buy a free-kick out of the referee for what would have been an extremely soft foul from Burn.

With Richarlison in danger of finding himself shown a red card, he was removed in the 87th-minute having failed to register a single shot on Martin Dubravka’s goal.

And as Musgrove clearly feels Richarlison should have been sent off earlier in the game, were United denied an improved opportunity to claim all three points by Pawson?
