The future of Rangers winger Scott Wright may be in doubt following some recent news relating to teammate Ryan Kent.

Indeed, as reported by Football Insider, the club’s board have agreed to offer Kent a ‘lucrative’ contact deal following internal talks.

While it remains unclear as to whether or not the former Liverpool man will commit his future to the Gers, this latest development could have a negative impact on Wright.

With that in mind, TIF has decided to investigate just why exactly.

Why it could mean spell trouble for Wright

Truth be told, Kent is very much the preferred option on the Rangers flank ahead of Wright. Indeed, the Englishman has played 2,841 minutes across all competitions this season, while the 24-year-old has managed just 1,161.

With an impressive 15 assists to his name as well, it’s fair to say Kent is providing far more than his teammate (who has set up just one goal this term).

This summer, the 25-year-old will enter the final year of his contract. If Rangers were happy to see him go, they wouldn’t offer him a new deal, but instead, try and offload him for whatever fee they could claim.

But, as mentioned earlier, the Ibrox board have agreed to stump up a big offer in an attempt to keep him with the club. While that speaks to their admiration for one player, it also represents a lack of faith in Wright.

If Rangers felt sure about his quality, they wouldn’t be so keen to him Kent on board. Being one year younger than his teammate, this could have been a natural moment for Wright to truly step up into a regular starting role. Instead, the club are hoping to throw a big pay-packet at Kent.

This could potentially have further repercussions on Wright as well.

Indeed, the club may need to offload someone to afford that bumper new contract and Wright could be sacrificed. After all, he has a contract that runs until 2025, so should have some value in the transfer market.

Is Scott Wright good enough for Rangers?

Yes

Yes

No

No

What’s more, he’s already been labelled as not good enough in comparison to Kent.

This March, former goalkeeper Paddy Kenny told Football Insider: “Is he good enough for Rangers? I’m not convinced, no, I don’t think he is.”

“Good Scottish Premiership player who you can rely on to do a good job, but at Rangers you a bit more.

“When you look at players like Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo, there’s no chance of Wright starting ahead of them.”

If the club’s hierarchy shares that view, Wright could be on his way out soon.

TIF Verdict…

While it is not exactly the final nail in the coffin for Wright just yet, this latest development certainly doesn’t look good for him.

If Kent signs a new deal, he will likely remain the first-choice option on the left-wing going forward.

Even if Kent leaves, however – as the big contract offer suggests – it feels more likely that Giovanni van Bronckhorst would seek out a new transfer as opposed to promoting Wright into a regular starting role.

All in all, Wright’s future seems to be under a few clouds for now.
