Football injury expert Ben Dinnery has given his thoughts on Newcastle United’s Allan Saint-Maximin and his current predicament.

An injury that he sustained recently has prevented the Frenchman from taking part in their last two games and he is doing all that he can to get back in the side as soon as possible.

He posted on his Instagram page (via The Chronicle) in Monaco showing him in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber trying to get ready for the Brentford clash and there was hope that he would be back for it, with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe claiming that it would be a “late call” whether or not to include him, but it was ultimately too soon for him to be back in action.

Newcastle United are getting set to take on Brighton tomorrow and speaking on his YouTube channel, Dinnery gave his thoughts on what would happen with Saint-Maximin when it came to his place in the team for the game at St James’ Park:

“I would urge caution with the Frenchman. He wasn’t seen on the training pitches on Wednesday at the time of recording. I haven’t had any further updates, so that puts his availability in the balance. Although Eddie Howe was hopeful and confident last weekend that he’ll recover. If he does, what I would suggest is it could be a place on the bench for the winger.”

Should Saint-Maximin start on Thursday?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Speaking in his press conference ahead of the game, after Dinnery had recorded and published his comments, Newcastle boss Howe did say hint that the club would “make a decision based off how he looks and how is injury status is after the session”, so it is very much in the balance as Dinnery hinted at.

But given the uncertainty surrounding him, it would probably be best for him to be left on the bench for this game as Dinnery hints at. Even though he has been an important member of the side this season, leading the team in dribbles per game, second in shots per game, third for key passes and bagging five goals and three assists (via WhoScored), they showed in their last two games that they can do just fine without him.

Not only would it be foolish of Howe to change a formula in the side that it working, but there’s no need to risk anything happening to him that could jeopardise him further down the line when they may be looking for him to make a big impact, and therefore the bench is the best place for him, if he’s available to play at all.
