Newcastle United took a huge step towards safety on Saturday afternoon, battling past Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 at St James’ Park, surviving late pressure.

The Magpies took the lead early on through Ryan Fraser. He broke the deadlock just 12 minutes into the tie. Two minutes later he was involved in the play again, assisting Fabian Schar as Newcastle raced out of the blocks to take a dream two goal lead, something they maintained till half time.

Lewis Dunk gave the hosts a scare. 10 minutes into the second period he halved the deficit, setting up a nervous wait till the full-time whistle. Newcastle held on to notch another three points.

Alistair Magowan for BBC Sport was live reporting on the game. While there’s plenty of plaudits surely about to head the way of Ryan Fraser, he lauded Allan Saint-Maximin, saying: “I tell you what sounds better than a St James’ Park roar when Newcastle are on the attack: a St James’ Park roar when Allan Saint-Maximin is on the attack. It’s guttural, full of anticipation and a delight to hear as he steams down the pitch after being out for two weeks. The crowd are now calling for Bruno Guimaraes to be introduced.”

Just by watching Newcastle, you can see the positive impact he has on the Magpies. Having him back will be a huge lift to the squad, offering Eddie Howe more options in attack.

The win leaves Newcastle with a seven point cushion to the drop zone. Taking into account their current form and the form of the other relegation candidates, that gap looks almost unassailable already! What a turn around by Howe at St James’ Park.
