TalkSport pundit Simon Jordan has given his thoughts on the idea of David Moyes coming back to take charge at Manchester United.

According to recent reports, Manchester United have managed to narrow their search for a new manager down to a shortlist of just four names: Mauricio Pochettino, Julen Lopetegui, Luis Enrique and Erik ten Hag.

However, given the trouble that Tottenham Hotspur had when it came to appointing a new manager last summer, whilst Man Utd might have a shortlist now, you can never rule anything out when it comes to the search for a new man in the dugout.

One name that, according to Jordan, should be considered is that of West Ham United boss Moyes, who had a disastrous spell in charge of the Red Devils in 2013/14, but has since done an incredible job at the London Stadium to such an extent that the two clubs are competing against each other for a spot in Europe.

Manchester United fans, do you remember how many points you picked up in seasons gone by? Let's find out, starting with 2020/21

Speaking on TalkSport when posed the question by co-host Jim White, Jordan said that given the tough job that Moyes had in taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson and all that he had won, compared to the state that the club are in now, expectation levels might have changed to an extent that Moyes should be considered once again, but he ultimately didn’t think that Moyes could totally return United to the days of Ferguson.

He said: “Everybody with half a brain in football knew that was a poisoned chalice. Everybody knew that the next cab off the rank, it was just an impossible situation. Now it’s a different situation, because almost, for these poor Man United fans – as much as you can say such a thing – their expectations have been smashed out of them.

“They still expect to do better than they’re doing, but they’re beginning to hone their expectations and realising that they’re no longer the Man United that has a God-given right, perhaps, to be the poster boys of the Premier League, they’ve got a lot of work to do.

“So that means this would be the perfect time for David Moyes to potentially go back to Manchester United. But does it mean that then it becomes a winning machine again? I’m not sure that it does.”

Interestingly, David Moyes stated back in 2013 that he hoped to work with Cristiano Ronaldo one day.

Given the work Moyes has done at West Ham, and to an extent Everton beforehand, when added to the financial capabilities that a club like Manchester United could offer him, the argument then becomes whether he could do a better job the second time around without the pressure of following on from arguably the best manager of all time in Ferguson.

Whether or not we even get to the stage where Moyes could be considered again is a different matter, but it certainly is interesting to think about a potential second coming of Moyes at Old Trafford after managing to reform himself in management.
