Leeds United journalist Joe Donnohue has slammed the club for not signing a striker in the transfer market despite funds being available.

The Premier League club recently revealed that forward Patrick Bamford has been playing with a plantar fascia injury for the last 12 months.

The statement went on to explain that he should now miss the next six weeks of football at a minimum and will need a ‘period of rest and rehabilitation’ to fully recover.

Reacting to the news on Twitter, Donnohue made clear his frustration with the club. He openly wondered why no backup signing was made, despite the fitness concern being known for so long and money being available to spend.

He wrote: “Patrick Bamford has been suffering from plantar fasciitis for 12 months. Now, it’s ruled him out for six weeks.

“Decision not to sign a striker last summer, or in January, still puzzling. Funds were there for Dan James & reportedly Brenden Aaronson, too.”

TIF thoughts on Patrick Bamford and Leeds…

Since the summer, as Donnohue points out, no new strikers have been brought in. If his assertion is true that the club had money to go and make a signing, it seems particularly baffling that they did not at least act in the winter transfer market – and that they opted to target RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson instead.

It’s not as if Bamford had managed to play through the pain either, with his season being completely derailed by injuries – he has just nine league appearances this term to date.

As a consequence of their transfer decisions, Leeds will now have to get through the next six weeks or so with youngsters Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood as the only natural strikers in the squad.

Taking everything into account, it’s easy to see why Donnohue has slammed the club for such ‘puzzling’ behaviour.
