Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has posted an encouraging message on his Instagram page as he gets ready for their game this week.

Having struggled to get much playing time at his former club, spending a lot of time on loan across a variety of teams, he has finally managed to find a club that appreciates him at Villa Park, as he has become a near ever-present member of the side, allowing him to flourish.

Which Premier League winner used to play for Villa's academy?

Last year, he won the club’s Player of the Season award whilst also being nominated for the Lev Yashin Trophy as one of the best goalkeepers in world football, both for his work at Aston Villa and as No 1 for Argentina – a role that he’s established for himself after his impressive first season for the club.

However, not content with what he has, he is looking to get better, saying as much on his Instagram page as he posted some photos of himself in training alongside the message: ‘Aim to improve every day’.

Do Villa need to spend big in the summer?

Improvement is certainly something that has been the order of the day for Aston Villa, with the club eighth in the form table since Gerrard took over the role in November after former boss Dean Smith had left them 17th in the league and just two points above the drop zone.

29-year-old Martinez has certainly played his role in the transformation, saving 67.7% of the shots he’s faced and keeping clean sheets in 32% of their games, which rank 15th and 8th in the league respectively (as per FBRef), so you can only imagine what Villa would look like if he was able to improve on that.

And whilst Villa aren’t in the hunt for European football or a trophy this season, a good end to the campaign can set them up for success next year – and you’d imagine that Martinez could end up playing a big role in things both this term and next.
