Journalist Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Arsenal and their apparent interest in winger Cody Gakpo.

A clear pattern has started to emerge when it comes to the kind of team that Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is looking to build at the Emirates Stadium.

Not only is he relying on young players that have started to make their way into the first team, but his moves in the transfer market are also a pretty big indicator, with no player arriving this season being older than 23.

And it looks as if that ethos is set to carry on when it comes to their latest target, PSV Eindhoven’s Dutch winger Gakpo, who is just 22 years old.

In what month did Mikel Arteta take over as the Arsenal boss?

Arsenal are somewhat thin on the wing right now, with just Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel Martinelli as their only natural wide players, so it is an area that you might expect them to address in the summer, and speaking on the latest edition of the Here We Go podcast, Romano appeared to confirm the club’s interest in the Dutchman.

He said: “It’s true that Arsenal are keeping tabs on him.

“Gakpo is a player they are following.”

TIF Thoughts on Fabrizio Romano’s comments about Cody Gakpo and Arsenal…

Would this move excite you if Arsenal can get it done?

No

Gakpo has been an incredibly productive player for PSV, racking up 37 goals and 33 assists during his 125 appearances for the club, so it’s clear that he knows where the goal is, and not only that, he has experience when it comes to European football having been a near-regular for them during their Europa League campaigns.

And it is that experience that might be the more crucial aspect of this potential transfer. With Arsenal in the driving seat when it comes to qualifying for European football next season, they might need someone who is used to playing on the bigger stages – something that some players at Arsenal like Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale and Takehiro Tomiyasu haven’t experienced before.

So having a player who is comfortable on the bigger stage who can help guide them through could be a huge mental boost to the side ahead of next season, assuming they can finish the job and achieve a European spot.
