TalkSport presenter and Arsenal fan Laura Woods has thrown her support behind the idea of the club signing Marcus Rashford this summer.

According to a report in The Daily Mirror, Arsenal might be in a position to try and sign the 24-year-old forward this summer.

The report claims that “Arsenal will offer Marcus Rashford an escape from Old Trafford this summer”, noting that the Gunners “will add the name of Manchester United’s striker to their hit-list” as they look to add some firepower with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah both set to be out of contract in the summer.

In what month did Mikel Arteta take over as the Arsenal boss?

Speaking on TalkSport, Woods claimed that she would be in favour of the Gunners pursuing a move like this, claiming that whilst his form might not be the greatest this year, it shouldn’t be a reflection of him overall and that he would be a big improvement to the current Arsenal side.

She said: “I’d love him. I saw a bit of criticism for this, I don’t know where that’s come from.  I think he’s a great player, I think he’s just having a bad season, which happens doesn’t it, form can come and go. But wow, if Arsenal got him, I think that’d be a great move.”

Given the rivalry that has been created between the two sides over the years, it might seem hard to believe that they might be in a position to make a deal with one another, but while moves between the clubs have been extremely rare, a few players have crossed the divide in recent times, so it shouldn’t be seen as a total impossibility.

And at the age of just 24, Rashford, valued at £76.5m on Transfermarkt, would certainly fit into the mould that Gunners boss Arteta is creating at the Emirates Stadium by building a team around younger talent.

Woods is right when she hints that he’s a great player that has had a bad season, because the numbers since his Manchester United debut show that there is a talent there, and that this season could just be an exception rather than turning into the rule for him.

Now it’s just a case of whether or not Manchester United would be willing to let him go, especially to a team that are currently – and may well next season, too – challenging them for a spot in European football.
