West Ham United seem destined to target a new striker and a centre-back in the summer when the transfer market reopens.
Indeed, while speaking on the Que Golazo YouTube channel, football journalist Fabrizio Romano outlined the club’s potential future business.
He said: “I’m sure that in the summer they will go for a striker, yes. I don’t know who will be the striker, because for Darwin Nunez, there will be many clubs jumping into the race, so it’s not going to be easy for West Ham.
“But striker will be a priority; centre-back will be another priority – they wanted [Duje] Caleta-Car from Marseille, but there was no agreement on the loan move. And so, let’s see what happens in the summer.
“But I’m sure that they will be busy. So David Moyes will have a lot of impact in the new signings, and they will go for two or three signings in the summer.”
So what could it mean for West Ham if they were to bring a new duo over the summer?
GSB make big statement
Having failed to make a single signing in the January transfer market, the powers that be at West Ham – namely co-owners David Gold, David Sullivan and vice-chairman Karren Brady – will have some work to do in the summer to appease fans.
This, of course, could be remedied by a big-name signing or two. In Darwin Nunez and Duje Caleta-Car, they may well just manage that. Indeed, if the Benfica striker is signed, for instance, he may well cost the club over £60m – this was the fee reportedly rejected after the Hammers came in with a Deadline Day offer.
Caleta-Car would also be a statement signing, with rival Premier League clubs such as Liverpool, Newcastle and Wolves all linked with a move for him in the past.
Zouma replacement found?
In upsetting Premier League news this week, a video showed West Ham defender Kurt Zouma kicking his pet cat. Despite that awful behaviour, he was still picked to play against Watford in their first game after footage of the incident emerged.

Even so, there is growing pressure on the club to take the Frenchman out of their team ahead of upcoming matches. Taking that into account, there’s no knowing the long-term future of Zouma, so he may need replacing in the summer.
With this in mind, Romano’s transfer update – in which he namechecks Caleta-Car of Marseille – should come as a big boost for West Ham fans.
Being a key part of a team that is currently second in Ligue 1, he certainly looks to be an interesting prospect and could provide a summer solution to the troubling Zouma situation.
