Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers has come in for some stick from James McFadden, who does some work for Sky Sports, over his performance in the Europa Conference League.

Celtic’s hopes of making it through to the next round of the competition took a major blow last night as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to Norwegian outfit Bodo/Glimt.

And whilst the away goals rule is no longer a thing, meaning that Ange Postecoglou’s men don’t have to match the Norwegian side’s tally on the night, it’s still going to be an uphill battle to overturn the result in the second leg.

The third goal on the night in particular wasn’t exactly a masterclass in defending from Celtic, as they gave the ball away in midfield and allowed the opposition to charge through midfield before Hugo Vetlesen’s shot deflected past Joe Hart to seal the result.

Commentating on the game for BBC Scotland (quoted by the BBC Sport website, 21:41), McFadden tore into the American defender for his role in the goal, claiming that he should have done a lot better in his efforts to close down Vetlesen.

He said: “Oh my word. You cannot give away a goal like that. [Reo] Hatate loses it, and then they get in between Celtic’s midfield and defence. Vetlesen gets his shot away and it takes the deflection. Carter-Vickers has to get out to him quicker.”

It certainly wasn’t a moment of glory for Carter-Vickers, as he can be seen retreating when Bodo/Glimt have the ball and allowed them to come at the Celtic goal rather than trying to stop the attack before it got any worse.

It capped off a rather poor night for the 24-year-old, as he gave the ball away 12 times, didn’t make a single interception and could only make one tackle (via SofaScore), so it’s fair to say that it wasn’t just that moment in particular that helped contribute to Celtic’s downfall.

Let’s just hope that he’s able to pick himself up and put in a better shift in the return leg, because with things the way they are, they’re going to need all the help they can get in order to overturn the result and make it through to the next round.
