TalkSport pundit Simon Jordan has given his thoughts on West Ham United and the way they conducted their business in the transfer window.

West Ham were rather quiet when it came to their business in January. They didn’t make any singings, with the only exits being those of fringe players who weren’t going to make much of an impact on the starting eleven.

That’s not to say that they weren’t interested in players, though, with names such as Jesse Lingard, Darwin Nunez and Kalvin Phillips to name just a few, finding themselves linked with a move to the London Stadium.

A staple of FIFA Ultimate Team in 2012, which Nigerian striker had a disastrous spell at the Hammers?

Speaking on TalkSport about West Ham’s business, Jordan slammed the club’s owners for how they handled their business, claiming that some of the deals that they were reportedly looking to make came across as bids that they were not going to follow through on.

He said: “The Kalvin Phillips transaction seems to me to be in that territory of batting your eyelid at something without the real intention of asking it out on a date.

“I don’t think West Ham are going to be a continual challenger for the top four, unless they can get into the top four, generate the wealth and continue to spend in a particular spending pattern that’s going to keep them there. Do I think they were they were dialling it in? Yeah, I think they were showboating a little bit.”

Will West Ham's lack of transfers cost them top six?

West Ham’s transfer business does come across as rather strange, because it’s a major risk when it comes to their ambitions for the rest of the season and how thin their squad is in certain areas of the pitch.

For instance, centre-forward is an area that the club have desperately needed to fix, and they found themselves linked with a whole host of forwards such as Patrik Schick, Ben Brereton Díaz, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Christian Benteke. And to not get one of them over the line is borderline criminal when you consider how tight the battle for a top-four space is this season.

And if they want to act like a top-four squad, then they have to start spending like one. Let’s just hope that the team as it is will be enough to get them over the line, otherwise they will seriously live to regret not making those signings when they had the chance.
