ExWHUemployee has given his thoughts on West Ham United and their failure to sign Divock Origi during the January transfer window.

There were some claims that West Ham might have tried to sign Origi during the window, with journalist Alex Crook claiming during an interview with GiveMeSport that given the connections between the Hammers and Will Salthouse, the Belgian’s agent, he expected David Moyes’ side to make a move for him.

A staple of FIFA Ultimate Team in 2012, which Nigerian striker had a disastrous spell at the Hammers?

Claims suggested that Liverpool would have considered permanent offers for Origi if they came in. An additional forward is something that West Ham have needed for some time now, with the club lacking any sort of support for Michail Antonio up front.

Speaking on the latest edition of The West Ham Way podcast ExWHUemployee expressed his dismay that the club didn’t make a move for the Reds striker during the window, citing him as someone who would have been perfect for the Hammers to sign given their situation.

“I’d take Origi, for example – I’d take him as the prime example. He’s scored for Liverpool in Champions League semi-finals, he’s scored for Liverpool at the highest stage of club football.

“Jurgen Klopp has said if he didn’t have Salah and Mane etc, that he’s a good player. He plays for Belgium, who are, I think, off the top of my head, the highest-ranked national team as well by FIFA ranking. So yeah, he’s not good enough to come and sit on the subs bench at West Ham. I just, I just don’t get it.”

TIF Thoughts on ExWHUemployee’s comments about West Ham United and Divock Origi…

Should West Ham have signed Divock Origi this winter?

No

When it comes to supporting off the bench and being a super-sub or filling in when the regular starters aren’t available – as he famously did against Barcelona in 2019 – there’s arguably no better player at the role than Origi, who has put up some decent numbers despite his limited role.

So you can see why ExWHUemployee might think he’d be the perfect option for a team like West Ham. But having been on the bench at Anfield for so long and still only at the age of 26, it would be hard to believe that Origi would move to another club just to do the same again, especially if he is taking a step down in terms of the size of the club.

So whilst Ex might be angry at how the club didn’t make a move for him, it’s not a guarantee that they would have been able to sign Origi, but you can understand his frustration that they didn’t at least make a serious attempt to do so.
