Sunderland are currently on the hunt for a new permanent manager, and Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards would like it to be Roy Keane.

The current Sky Sports pundit has, of course, been at the helm as Sunderland manager once before from 2006-2008 and helped guide them to promotion from the Championship into the Premier League.

Would Keane be a good manager for Sunderland?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Phil Smith has reported that Mike Dodds and Michael Proctor will remain in charge on an interim basis for Sunderland’s match on Saturday against Doncaster Rovers, so no appointment appears to be imminent.

Even if no appointment is on the horizon, Edwards has taken to Twitter to voice his opinion on who should be the next Black Cats boss, with the journalist claiming: ‘I’d love to see Roy Keane back at #SAFC as manager. In fact, I think it would be brilliant for the club.’

Keane has not been a first-team manager since he was sacked by Ipswich Town in 2011, so hiring someone that’s been out of the hotseat for so long would be a pretty big risk, especially when Sunderland can ill afford to miss out on promotion this season.

Sunderland have already had one emotional return in recent days with Jermain Defoe returning for a second stint at the club after he departed in 2017, but while the striker arrives with pedigree given he managed to net 32 goals at his previous club, Keane has been working in the studio for several years now, so could be rusty when it comes to dealing with players and working in a dressing room.
