Tottenham Hotspur could be set to grab themselves a bargain when it comes to the possible permanent signing of Cristian Romero this summer.

The Argentinian joined them in the summer window of 2021, on a loan deal with the option to make it permanent for a fee of €55m (£46.7m) when the end of this season rolls around.

This deal comes in at under his maximum value, according to the CIES Football Observatory – a company which has developed a powerful econometric approach to assess the transfer value of professional footballers on a scientific basis – which currently values him at as much as €70m (£58.3m).

And as a result of those values, it looks as if Tottenham could be in for a terrific deal when it comes to Romero, because his impact on the team since joining has been impressive.

He currently is averaging an 86.6% pass completion rate, as well as 2.3 tackles, 3.1 clearances, 1.2 blocks, 1.8 interceptions and 2.5 successful aerial duels per game, with the latter three categories leading the side in the Premier League (via WhoScored).

Not only that, but he played a major role in making sure that they grabbed victory this past weekend against Manchester City, making seven clearances, blocking two shots, making two interceptions and completing 90% of his passes (via SofaScore) – more than making up for his handball that gave the home side a late equaliser which could have come back to haunt them were it not for Harry Kane’s late winner.

If Romero can keep playing the way that he has been between now and the end of the season, it certainly appears as though Tottenham will have pulled off a genuine coup with this one.

And seeing as he’s only 23, he could very well go on to be someone that can have an impact on the side for many years to come, further demonstrating just how good a pick-up this could be for Spurs.

It looks as if this is one deal Fabio Paratici managed to get right after his appointment as director of football last summer, and if the rest of his signings can have the same impact as Romero, Spurs could well be onto something for the next few years.
