Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has been discussing Eddie Howe and his future at the club following his first few months in charge.

It’s fair to say that Howe was not dealt the best hand when he was appointed as Newcastle manager back in November.

The club were still going through changes following the sale to the new investors, while he wasn’t able to bring in any new players for the best part of two months until the January window opened, and during that time, the club were still in the relegation zone and without a win to their name.

Can you name who scored the most league goals for Newcastle United in years gone by? Let's see if you can starting with 2020/21

Since then, he has really turned the club around. They’ve been on a good run of form and are currently above the Premier League drop-zone.

And speaking on the latest edition of NUFC Matters, when discussing whether or not the pressure on Howe has increased given the backing he was given in the January window, Kennedy claimed that the 44-year-old was in a pretty good place when it came to his standing with the Newcastle United board.

He said: “I think it’s too early to know what will happen moving forward. I think giving a guy a job in the first week of November is more than enough time to keep a team up. And I think if there hasn’t been any notable upturn by towards the end of the season, I think I wouldn’t rule out a change, personally.

“But that’s not from anything that I’ve heard, that’s again just using my own opinion. What I have heard is that they seem reasonably happy with what’s gone before.”

Will Eddie Howe get sacked by the end of the season?

So it appears that based on what Kennedy has hinted at, Howe has got the backing from the Newcastle board, which given what he’s managed to do with the team since he was appointed, seems fair enough.

And based on what he’s done so far, it seems like he has put himself in a decent position to at least lead the club forward should things go bad and they drop down into the Championship – a division that he has experience in getting out of during his time at Bournemouth.

So whilst he might not necessarily be the man to lead them in five years or so, when you imagine the club will be to trying to match their ambitious aims, it seems as if for the foreseeable future, he is in a safe place at St. James’ Park.
