Newcastle United are now sitting two points clear of the relegation zone following their huge win on Tuesday night on Tyneside.

January signing Kieran Trippier opened his account in a black and white shirt with the third goal of the evening for Eddie Howe’s side.

However, Howe will have been left holding his breath in the final minutes of the game as the right-back was taken off after sustaining a slight calf injury.

Speaking after the game, Howe had the following update to provide on the Englishman’s issue: “I think Kieran’s got a slight calf issue. He motioned that he needed to come off, so we’ll have to see how that is.”

After joining in January, Trippier has played 90 minutes in all three of his Premier League appearances, having only missed the additional time on Tuesday night (via Transfermarkt).

And Newcastle reporter Lee Ryder feels Trippier’s actions after the game may prove a positive sign for Howe and the Newcastle fans regarding his ability to play at the weekend:

“The right-back was able to conduct post-match interviews after the game so there is already one good sign emerging from the Toon camp,” Ryder wrote for The Chronicle.

TIF Thoughts on Kieran Trippier’s impact at Newcastle United…

The England international arrived on Tyneside from the dizzy heights of being a current La Liga champion with Atletico Madrid, and ahead of their Champions League campaign restarting this month.

Having joined from Diego Simeone’s side, expectations will have been high and he certainly has lived up to them, having been awarded Newcastle’s Player of the Month for January.

And his quality was on display on Tuesday night as he left many impressed with his general performance, which was then capped off by his sensational free-kick to seal the points.

With such an impressive start to life on Tyneside under his belt, fans will definitely be hoping he is able to face Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa on Sunday.
