Manchester United are hoping to tie goalkeeper David de Gea down to a new contract at Old Trafford, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian journalist was speaking on his Here We Go podcast and claimed that both parties want to open conversations over a potential contract extension.

Do you expect De Gea to sign a new deal?

Yes

Yes

No

No

And this comes just a matter of days after the Spanish goalkeeper was interviewed by UEFA where he declared his desire to continue playing his football at the Theatre of Dreams.

By the end of the season, the 31-year-old will have just one year remaining on his current deal with the Red Devils, however, it is believed the Spaniard has the option to extend his stay by another year.

Romano said: “I think it’s going to take some time to sign a new contract, to agree a new contract. But Man United want to open conversation with De Gea this year, 2022, to discuss over his new contract and not arrive to have problems in the coming season.

“So this is why Man United soon will discuss with De Gea. It’s not something discussed now, but this is the plan. Yes, he made an interview with UEFA and he said that he’s loving his Man United life, so I’m sure that De Gea has good, good chances to stay and sign a new deal with Man United.”

TIF Thoughts on De Gea’s future…

We think it is crucial United are able to secure De Gea’s future at Old Trafford given the club’s lack of stability in other departments such as the managerial role.

De Gea has now been playing his football in Manchester since 2011 after joining from Atletico Madrid and has established himself as one of the league’s best goalkeepers.

And given the club have big decisions to make in the summer on who will become their new manager and the future of players like Paul Pogba, we think worrying about their goalkeeper would be completely unnecessary.

Dean Henderson returned to United last season and the 24-year-old has been unable to provide De Gea with any real competition between the sticks, and we feel at a time where the managerial situation remains uncertain, the Spaniard’s leadership and experience could prove crucial.
