The Square Ball writer ‘Oddy’ has compared Leeds United defender Junior Firpo to club legend Norman Hunter.

Over the weekend, Marcelo Bielsa’s men played Manchester United in front of a packed Elland Road crowd in an intensely atmospheric game.

In the end, the away team managed to come away with all three points, but the occasion will be remembered for the flying tackles in the driving rain just as much as it will be for the final score.

Perfectly capturing the full-blooded spirit of the game, an image of Junior Firpo standing over a seemingly injured Anthony Elanga was shared on Twitter by Oddy. The writer also included a black and white picture of icon Norman Hunter in a similar pose for Leeds, leering over another stricken player.

He included the caption: “Excellent Norman Hunter vibes from Firpo yesterday.”

Considering Firpo has only been at the club since the start of the season having arrived from Barcelona in the summer, it’s a very complimentary comparison to make.

Not only was Hunter an absolute legend at Leeds – winning two league titles, two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups, the FA Cup and the League Cup during his Whites career – he was also known for his tough tackling, and thus famously given the nickname ‘Bites Yer Legs’.

Was Junior Firpo a poor singing by Leeds?

No

As is evidenced by the tweet, Firpo did enough in the match to earn the respect of many LUFC fans. No doubt, he’ll want to carry on that form into the remainder of the season as his side look to stay out of a relegation battle.
