Leeds United saw bids for Brenden Aaronson rejected during the January transfer window, but they aren’t cooling their interest in the American international according to Phil Hay.

The initial bid of 15 million pounds was rejected, before RB Salzburg rejected a follow up bid of 20 million pounds, remaining firm on their stance.

Positively for Victor Orta and Leeds, the American still looks destined for Elland Road, but they’ll have to wait until the summer to make him a Leeds man.

Will Leeds sign Aaronson in the summer?

Marcelo Bielsa gets Klich upgrade?

Leeds United have been reliant on Mateusz Klich for a number of seasons, with the midfielder having now played a whopping 162 games for the club over his career.

In Aaronson, the Whites could find Bielsa’s dream upgrade on Klich, with Phil Hay of the Athletic drawing exciting comparisons between the two.

He said: “In the American, they identified clear shades of Mateusz Klich and it could be argued that Klich’s position, the bridge between the midfield four and No 10, is where they are most in need of additional numbers and quality.

“Aaronson has many of those (Klich’s) traits too and in simple age terms, he turned 21 in October while Klich will be 32 when next season starts. Recruiting the USA international would prepare the ground for a future passing of the baton.”

So bringing in Aaronson could prove to be an upgrade on Klich in terms of consistency and actually bridging the gap from the midfield and attack.

With Klich into his thirties now, the signing is likely to strengthen the depth in that particular role for Bielsa, with the Polish international then being faded out in favour of the young American.

The end for Rodrigo?

Rodrigo has been tipped for an Elland Road exit in January and the signing of Aaronson could mark the end of his Leeds career.

That attacking minded midfield role where Rodrigo has been deployed despite being a striker by trade is likely to be the American’s role.

He’s only featured 17 times in all competitions, only finding the back of the net twice, very underwhelming for the highest earner at the club.

Rodrigo earns £100,000 a week at Leeds and hasn’t lived up to that wage. Moving him on would free a lot of money up just on wages, allowing Leeds to spend it elsewhere.

Given that Aaronson has predominantly played in that number ten role, his arrival at Elland Road could spell the end for Rodrigo and his time at the club.
