Greg O’Keeffe has ranted on the All Together Now podcast about Everton’s Andre Gomes, who flattered to deceive on Tuesday night.

Gomes was handed a second consecutive start under new boss Frank Lampard for their Premier League clash against Newcastle United, but ended up achieving a WhoScored rating of just 6.12, the fourth-worst on the pitch of players that started the match.

Lampard, as well as some Everton fans, may have expected more from Gomes after he impressed during their FA Cup victory last Saturday, when he dominated the midfield by winning the most amount of tackles during the 90 minutes against Brentford, however, that appeared to be a false dawn.

Speaking the day after their defeat at St. James’ Park, O’Keeffe expressed his thoughts on Gomes and how he can make managers think he’s a lot better than his performances suggest.

“I think he [Lampard] might have learned, dare I say, Andre Gomes is a bit of a player who can con managers. He can look good [but] he can con everyone.

“It can’t be deliberate, but maybe it is the injury that’s just sapped him, but he looked like a potential world-beater on Saturday, and last night, straight back down to earth.”

TIF Thoughts on Andre Gomes…

Having been signed as a big-name player from Barcelona back in 2018, Everton fans may well have expected more than the midfielder notching just two goals and seven assists in his 95 appearances for the club.

However, as O’Keeffe mentioned, the Portugal international did suffer a horrific ankle injury in 2019 which may well have taken him back a lot more than some anticipated when it comes to his mentality, as he could now be too concerned or worried about going into challenges or fully pushing his body to its limits in case something happens – but that sort of player is not what the Toffees need in their current position.
