The future of Morgan Sanson at Aston Villa could be in doubt, as the club are now reportedly in ‘the box seat’ to sign Philippe Coutinho permanently.

This January, the Villans completed a six-month loan move for the Brazilian, which could potentially keep him at the club beyond the duration of that initial spell if the £33m option to buy is taken.

Since Coutinho arrived in Birmingham, he has impressed, with two goals and two assists in five Premier League outings. In that same time, however, midfielder teammate Sanson has seen his opportunities fade away fast.

Indeed, the Frenchman was actually subbed off against Manchester United to make way for the former Liverpool ace when making his debut, and since then, Sanson has not played a single minute of football.

Will Morgan Sanson ever come good for Aston Villa?

While talking to GiveMeSport, journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Steven Gerrard’s side are looking the most likely to go and sign Coutinho at the end of the season – and that the deal in his contract means they should be favourites to land their man.

He said: “They’re in the box seat right now. They’ve got him on loan with an option to buy as well.”

Villa paid Marseille a reported fee of £16m to acquire Sanson as recently as 2021. Since then, the 27-year-old has done little to justify his price – featuring in just 15 Premier League games, without scoring or claiming an assist.

Considering the issues Sanson is currently having as he tries to get regular playing time at Aston Villa, this mooted deal for Coutinho would surely be the final nail in the coffin when it comes to his time at the club.
