Football writer Charles Watts has expressed doubts over whether new Arsenal signing Auston Trusty will ever actually play for the club.

While you would be forgiven for thinking the Gunners failed to make a transfer in the January winter market, they did actually bring in a fresh face on Deadline Day.

Indeed, the American defender signed on a permanent transfer from Colorado Rapids but will remain with the MLS side on loan until the end of the season, with Arsenal intending to send him out on loan in Europe next season.

Will Auston Trusty ever play for Arsenal?

Yes

Yes

No

No

However, while speaking about Trusty on his YouTube channel, Watts felt he may never end up playing for the club.

He said: “It’s obviously Stan Kroenke, one of his franchises over there, his MLS franchise. Trusty’s a centre-back, he’s 23.

“He’s going to spend the remainder of the season back on loan with Colorado and then the idea is to bring him over to Europe, send him out on loan next season to continue his development.

“You know, whether this ends up being a player who never plays for Arsenal, I think you lot are probably as sceptical as I am on that one.”

TIF Thoughts on Auston Trusty and Arsenal…

For those wondering why the Gunners have signed an MLS defender with no immediate intention of using him, it’s worth knowing that Colorado Rapids are also owned by Stan Kroenke.

Despite that connection, it does seem as though Trusty is a talented prospect in his own right. His performances have led to a recent call-up for the American men’s national team’s training camp, while he is also a versatile player who can play at centre-back or as a left-back.

It will certainly be interesting to see where he is loaned to in Europe next season and whether or not he is given much of a chance to impress at Arsenal over the duration of his contract.
